Milioni di utenti, in tutto il mondo, nella serata del 22/12/2010 non sono riusciti a collegarsi al proprio account Skype. Per tutta la serata gli account Skype non funzionava più; nessuna notizia ufficiale, solamente una comunicazione dal team di Skype, via Twitter, per rassicurare tutti che gli ingegneri stavano lavorano per risolvere. Il programma che tenta di collegarsi all’infinito, i contatti che non diventano mai verdi: questa è la situazione apparsa a milioni di utenti in tutto il mondo. Da prima pareva un caso localizzato solamente in Italia ma, poi, si è capito che il black out era esteso a molte altre nazioni.
Finalmente alle 22.00, ora italiana, qualcosa si è mosso e le prime notizie ufficiale a riguardo del blackout sono apparse in un comunicato stampa ufficiale, ecco il testo intero:
Skype downtime today
Earlier today, we noticed that the number of people online on Skype was falling, which wasn’t typical or expected, so we began to investigate.
Skype isn’t a network like a conventional phone or IM network – instead, it relies on millions of individual connections between computers and phones to keep things up and running. Some of these computers are what we call ‘supernodes’ – they act a bit like phone directories for Skype. If you want to talk to someone, and your Skype app can’t find them immediately (for example, because they’re connecting from a different location or from a different device) your computer or phone will first try to find a supernode to figure out how to reach them.
Under normal circumstances, there are a large number of supernodes available. Unfortunately, today, many of them were taken offline by a problem affecting some versions of Skype. As Skype relies on being able to maintain contact with supernodes, it may appear offline for some of you.
What are we doing to help? Our engineers are creating new ‘mega-supernodes’ as fast as they can, which should gradually return things to normal. This may take a few hours, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption to your conversations. Some features, like group video calling, may take longer to return to normal.

Come si può leggere il problema sembra legato alla gestione dei “supernodi” che Skype utilizza per funzionare. I “supernodi” sono dei PC ai quali viene chiesto di gestire, smaltire e smistare il traffico di Skype.
Per un qualche motivo, che gli ingegneri non hanno comunicato, tali supernodi si sono bloccati. Il team di Skype di è visto costretto, quindi, a creare dei “mega-supernodi” per poter ripristinare il traffico.
Non si sa ancora bene quanto sia vasto questo black-out. Attendiamo la giornata di domani per ricevere maggiori dettagli.
